Edgehill Drive to close three days for Inclined Plane work Monday

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Edgehill Drive will be closed temporarily next week to enable crews to remove sheave wheels needed to repair the Inclined Plane.

Issues with the wheels brought the project to a nearly yearlong standstill until this past month.

CamTran Executive Director Rose Lucey-Noll said Edgehill must be closed to traffic from Monday through Wednesday to allow scaffolding to be erected to allow main haul sheave wheels to be removed from a "sheave room" space below.

Steel beams and the operating booth also had to be removed temporarily to enable contractors to access the large metal wheels, which will be hauled to Speranza Specialty Machine Shop in Westmoreland County for repair and polishing, she said.

Two additional safety sheaves have already been repaired and are now being taken to a separate mechanical contractor for required measurements and additional inspection, she said.

Lucey-Noll provided new details about the progress in a one-page update to media Friday.

She said the Edgehill closure will span from Erie Street to Greene Street.

The Inclined Plane's observation deck will also be closed through Wednesday while crews are working at the scene.

Asiago's Restaurant will remain open to the public both days, Lucey-Noll said.

CamTran officials have said they anticipate the work will allow the Inclined Plane to reopen this year.

Before that can occur – even after construction wraps – CamTran will have to complete a 30-day testing process, a 30-day safety inspection and approximately 90 days of operator training, officials have said.
