Fast, affordable meals don’t have to come from a drive thru window or the frozen aisle.

For a meal that’s filling, healthy and new to the community, try Delhi Cafe on Belmont Avenue in Youngstown.

When you walk into Delhi Cafe Youngstown, it feels breezy and open with wooden beams, high-rising ceilings and mirrors, an oasis from the summer heat.

Laughter fills the air from the bar, friends and families sitting together in booths and staff greeting guests at the door like they’re coming back home.

This was my second visit to Dehli Cafe, all part of my quest to diversify my meals on the job and at home. I want to find a way to incorporate more tasty vegetables into my diet since I’m usually not a fan of greens.

The vast menu features descriptions of each item and ingredients listed, including several vegetarian options.

I ordered two things I knew I’d devour: vegetarian samosa chat and garlic tandoori roti.

My favorite part of the samosa chat is the chickpeas, which are high in protein. I didn’t expect to like them so much, but paired with mint sauce, yogurt, onions and tamarind, it’s such a happy bite of food.

You get to choose how spicy you want the dish to taste on a scale of one to 10; I chose 5.

The delectable combination of spices in the samosa chat compliment the warm roti with garlic perfectly. Each serving is about four slices of bread.

One of the best parts of the meal is the complimentary pita chips served with three chutneys.

My favorites were the onion and mint chutney, and I got to take home sauce containers of all three for my lunches throughout the week. The whole meal cost less than $20 and left me full but not sluggish in the heat.

Next time, I’m coming back to try daal, tandoori chicken, momos and dessert, like mango ice cream.
