A Youngstown police report stated a man with a handgun was taken from a residence in the 200 block of Greenley Lane about 8:30 p.m. July 3 after a short standoff.

A caller to 911 had advised her grandson was in the basement drinking, pacing back and forth and talking crazy. When officers arrived, the woman warned that the grandson also had a gun “down there.”

After unsuccessfully trying to get the man to come out of the basement, officers stated the man expressed a “will to die,” as he pulled out the handgun, pointing it at officers and at his own head, the report stated.

Officers then called the department’s CRT unit and a negotiator to assist at the scene. After a lengthy standoff, officers were able to get the man upstairs and go to the hospital.

The man freely gave up his firearm, was handcuffed and taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for a mental evaluation. The firearm, a Sarsilmar (SAR9) 9mm was logged in as evidence, the report stated.

We talk about the decision to move Tim McGraw's Youngstown concert to 2025 and discuss what Youngstown's next steps should be.
