The Board of Mahoning County Commissioners approved a broadband expansion project that will expand Internet access to under-served residents in Springfield Township and improve connectivity.
The commissioners approved $250,000 for the high-speed internet expansion project with Comcast and the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments.
“We are proud to be selected by Springfield Township to connect residents to fast, reliable and secure Internet,” said Ricky Frazier Jr., senior vice president for Comcast’s Keystone Region. “This builds on work Comcast is doing across Mahoning County to connect more local homes and businesses to the power of the nation’s largest, fastest and most trusted broadband network.”
According to the commissioners, they were looking to upgrade Internet access for townships with slower speeds using American Rescue Plan money.
“We wanted to make sure connectivity and utilization of broadband was available in Springfield,” the Mahoning County Commissioners stated. “Then, Comcast came into the picture and assisted and pulled everything together. The American Rescue Plan Act funds enabled us to do things for communities in outlying areas and townships, such as Springfield, that may not have had the ability to get large investments.”
The commissioners made the announcement with Comcast and Eastgate representatives on Wednesday at the Springfield Township Administration Building.
The project is expected to be completed by December 2025, providing high-quality internet access to areas most in need.
