The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library’s annual countywide reading initiative this fall will explore how cultures and communities are connected by the traditions, the innovations, and the stories shared through food.
Trumbull County Reads 2024 will feature the memoir, Yes, Chef: A Memoir by Marcus Samuelsson with Veronica Chambers. A variety of book discussions, cooking demonstrations, and more learning experiences related to the food and family themes found in the book will take place at libraries during October.
Discussion about Samuelsson’s book will be held 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 9 at the Cortland library, 2 p.m. Thursday Oct. 10 at the main Warren Trumbull County library at 444 Mahoning Avenue NW in Warren, 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Liberty branch library and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the Howland library.

Youth events
- Apple Adventures at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Brookfield library where children in grades K-5 and their grownups can try three types of apples to see which is their favorite. Registration is required.
- DIY Afterschool Snacks 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7 at the Lordstown Library. For children in grades K-6 who will create, discover and experiment through science, art and stories. Registration is required.
- How to Make a Halloween Char-Boo-terie Board, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the main Warren-Trumbull County library. For children ages 8-12. Registration is required for this Halloween themed charcuterie snack board. Attendees are to consider food allergens, intolerances or other sensitivities when sharing snacks.
- Movie showing of “Ratatouille, at 5:30 p.m. Monday Oct. 28 at the main Warren library.
- The Ultimate Grilled Cheese Challenge at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 at the main Warren Library. Registration is required for all aspiring teen-aged chefs. A panel of local judges will choose the winner.
- Cookie decorating at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Howland library. For teens in grades 7-12, registration is required.
- Haunted Gingerbread Houses at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21 at the Lordstown library. For teens in grades 7-12, registration is required.
Adult events
- The Emotionally Intelligent Author will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the main Warren library. Using Samuelsson’s book as a guide, a workshop will be held to learn how to create compelling narratives. Registration for adults is requested.
- A Taste of African Heritage Food three parts at the main Warren library – 10 a.m. each day on Fridays, Oct. 11, 18 and 25. The series of cooking demonstrations will be presented by Central State University Extension.
- Cooking at the Library at 5 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 16 at the Liberty library. Registration is required for this event where adults can work together to complete a recipe and then enjoy the creation.
- Foraging Fun, 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Brookfile Library. Amy Reeher of the Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District will present the basics of gathering edibles from the wild. Learn what there is to eat right in your own backyard.
- The story of Cockeye BBQ and Creamery will be presented at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at the main Warren library. The family behind the successful Warren business will give the inside scoop on their restaurant and ice cream shop.
- Taste Test trivia at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21 at the main Warren library. Registration is required.
- Wild Mushrooms, 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Brookfield library. Walt Sturgeon of the Ohio Mushroom Society will present a diverse program about the fungi found at our feet.
- A free spice kit is available to all adults through the month of October at all library locations including the Trumbull County bookmobile. Each kit includes a sample of a Berbere spice, history of the spice and recipes.
