Police chased a 23-year-old man covered in blood, then found two people shot dead in his SUV, New Mexico authorities said.

Officers responded to a disorderly conduct call at about 11 p.m. Sept. 30, the Santa Fe Police Department said in a Facebook post.

A black Cadillac SUV was found at the bottom of a dry creek, and a man identified as Manuel Joseph Martinez got out of the vehicle and fled, police said.

The armed man was coated in blood and dropped his gun when officers arrested him, police said.

Police said they went back to his SUV and found a man and woman dead with gunshot wounds.

They were identified as Abraham Dominic Romo, 19, and Ebony Faith Martinez, 23, both from Santa Fe, police said.

Martinez was arrested and accused of two counts of murder, one count of tampering with evidence, and two counts of resisting and obstructing an officer.

Police said he had recently been arrested on Sept. 22 and accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and trafficking controlled substances.

He was released on personal recognizance for these charges, meaning he agreed to appear in court and follow the rules set in his release papers.
