A 3-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run while crossing the street with his mom and sister, police in Michigan say.
Livonia police were called about a hit-and-run around 10:45 p.m. June 29, according to a news release from the police department.
A 28-year-old woman was crossing a street with her 3-year-old twins when they were struck by a vehicle, police said.
The driver of the vehicle took off as witnesses helped get the children out of the street, according to police.
All three were taken to local hospitals, and the twin boy died from his injuries, police said. His sister and their mom were last listed in critical condition.
“I’m really, really torn apart seeing my grandson just laying on the table like that, and my daughter with tubes, and my other grandbaby with tubes down their neck, and you know all they wanted to do was go out and have fun at the carnival and the fireworks,” Regina Robinson, the children’s grandmother, told WXYZ. “I’m really messed up right now.”
On June 30, police released an update saying a 47-year-old woman was identified as the driver and taken into custody.
“Of all of it, even though all this is a great tragedy, the worst thing of all is how are we gonna tell Tia? She doesn’t know,” Michael Robinson, the children’s grandfather, told WXYZ, referring to his daughter. “She’s been in a coma since they brought her in.”
Police did not release the name of the driver and have not said if any charges will be filed. They said the investigation is ongoing.
Livonia is about a 20-mile drive west from Detroit.
