Why one of the nation’s top 15 grocers has recalled bags of chocolates

Erroneous packing of chocolates has triggered a recall to prevent a situation that can have serious consequences.
Meijer recalled Frederik’s by Meijer Dark Chocolate Almonds because some of the chocolates might be dark chocolate-covered cashews. Most consumers would consider this a mere annoyance, but those with a cashew allergy, as Meijer’s recall notice states, “run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction” if they eat cashews.
While both almonds and cashews are tree nuts, people can have a cashew allergy without having an almond allergy.

Meijer, the nation’s 13th largest grocer according to Numerator.com, said it learned of the problem from a customer.
This covers Fredrck’s Dark Chocolate Almonds in 12-ounce pouches with sell by dates of 05/07/2026 and 05/28/2026 and boxes with eight 1.5-ounce pouches with a sell by date of 05/05/2026. They went to Meijer stores in Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin.
If there’s any chance these chocolates would wind up in the mouth of someone with a cashew allergy, return them to the customer service desk at any Meijer for a full refund. Questions about this recall can be answered by Meijer at 800-543-3704, 7 a.m. to 1 a.m., Eastern time.
