‘Big Bertha’ the cat is on health journey, but needs a home and love, shelter says

A squishy girl with a lot of love to give is on a health journey to get her weight managed — and needs a new owner who is understanding about it.

Her name is Big Bertha, and when she was brought into an Ohio shelter, she was much bigger than she is now.

“Big Bertha’s journey hasn’t been easy. When she first came into our care, she weighed a staggering 21 pounds — far too much for her petite frame and short legs,” the Jefferson County Humane Society and Jefferson County Animal Shelter in Wintersville said in a March 30 Facebook post.

“Thanks to dedicated care, she’s now down to 16 pounds, but she still has a way to go. Her size has made grooming difficult, leaving her uncomfortable and in need of assistance.”

According to the shelter, Bertha is a happy girl who loves everyone and every thing.

“Despite her struggles, Bertha is nothing but love. She’s wonderful with cats and dogs, playful when she has the energy, and one of the sweetest, most vocal cats you’ll ever meet. But her weight holds her back from living the full, happy life she deserves,” the shelter said.

The shelter isn’t looking for just anyone to step up and take the feline in. They need to be a dedicated individual who knows it’s going to take some work and hard love.

“We are not looking for someone who finds her size ‘cute.’ We are looking for someone who sees her struggle—who understands that she needs patience, care, and commitment to continue her weight loss journey. Bertha deserves a future where she can run, play, and simply be comfortable in her own body,” the shelter says.

Wintersville is about a 140-mile drive northeast from Columbus.
