The Penguin Collective recently announced that 50 student-athletes at Youngstown State University have signed NIL deals through the company, accumulating a total of over $515,000 in earnings.
NIL stands for name, image, and likeness. The definition of NIL is simple: It is the possibility of compensation paid to NCAA student-athletes to promote, partner, or represent brands. The mutually beneficial relationship is built off the athlete’s fame in order to grow a business.
The achievement underscores the power of NIL to empower athletes both on and off the field while strengthening the connection between YSU and the local community, according to a social media post by the Collective.
Here’s the breakdown of NIL for YSU athletes in the year of 2024:
24 Football Players
18 Men’s Basketball Players
8 Student-Athletes Across Other Sports, including Women’s Basketball, Women’s Soccer, Softball and Baseball
Ty Petrey and his company, H.D. Growth Partners of Liberty Township, oversee its Penguin Collective, a separate business entity and fundraising arm dedicated to helping YSU Penguins athletes in all sports profit from their name, image and likeness (NIL) capabilities.
