Canfield, which just keeps rolling along the unbeaten path, once again leads this week’s mahoningmatters.com Super 7 girls basketball poll. Here’s a look at the rankings:
Canfield
Canfield, which dropped down to Division IV this season, posted its most impressive win of the season last week when the Cardinals went on the road and upended returning D2 state qualifier Laurel, 47-45.
The Cardinals have rattled off nine straight wins to open the season and should be a force in the Division IV postseason tournament.
The Cardinals are averaging 57.7 points-per-game and their strong defense is allowing just 33.4 ppg.
Columbiana
Columbiana vaulted all the way up to No. 2 in this week’s ratings after another impressive week.
The unbeaten Clippers rolled to a 51-16 win over the Beaver Local Beavers in their most recent game.
Columbiana is 8-0 on the season and is averaging 55 points-per-game while its outstanding defense is allowing just 23.2 points-per-game. That includes holding two of its opponents under 10 points and four of its foes under 20 ppg.
Austintown Fitch
Austintown Fitch, which plays a rugged schedule, drops from No. 2 to No. 3 in the ratings after sustaining a setback to powerful Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary.
But the Falcons have also beaten teams such as West Branch, Hathaway Brown, Walsh Jesuit and Hudson this season.
The Falcons sport a record of 6-4.
West Branch
West Branch remains the No. 4-ranked team in the ratings.
The Warriors are 8-1 on the campaign and went on the road to Uniontown last week while posting a 37-30 win over the Federal League’s Lake Blue Streaks.
The Warriors, who sport one of the stronger defenses in the area, are surrendering an average of just 29.4 points-per-game.
Youngstown Chaney
Youngstown Chaney retains its No. 5 ranking in the mahoningmatters.com Super 7 poll.
The Cowboys defeated the Mineral Ridge Rams 63-66 in their most recent outing.
Chaney is 6-2 on the season.
Poland
Poland, which has won five games in a row, jumps into the poll at No. 6 this week.
The Bulldogs, who are 6-3 overall, whipped the Badger Braves 47-29 in their last game.
Poland is scoring 40.6 points-per-game.
Warren Harding
Warren Harding is the No. 7 team in the rankings.
The Raiders split their last two games, defeating the Lakeview Bulldogs 47-44 and dropping a 52-50 decision to Athens.
Warren Harding is 8-2 on the season.
