Canfield solidified its ranking as the No. 1 team in the mahoningmatters.com Super 7 boys basketball poll with a very impressive win last week. Here’s a look at this week’s rankings with a few changes:

Canfield

Canfield, which is 7-1 on the season while playing a very demanding schedule, remains No. 1 in the poll after holding off No. 2-ranked East Liverpool 83-79 before a large crowd in Watkins Gymnasium last week.

The Cardinals displayed outstanding balance in that contest as six Canfield players scored in double figures against East Liverpool.

Canfield, which has dropped down to Division IV in the OHSAA’s new seven division format, has also beaten returning D2 state semifinalist Youngstown Ursuline this season.

East Liverpool

Despite its close loss to No. 1 Canfield, East Liverpool remains No. 2 in this week’s poll.

The Potters hit 14 three-pointers in the close 83-79 showdown at No. 1 Canfield, led by standout guard Cohen Pease, who tossed in a career-high 36 points in that contest.

The Potters, who are 8-2 on the season, are averaging 64.5 points-per-game which is one of the better offensive scoring averages in the greater Mahoning Valley.

Youngstown Ursuline

Powerful Youngstown Ursuline, which like Canfield, plays a rugged regular-season schedule to prepare itself for a long postseason run, remains No. 3 in the ratings.

The Irish, who are 6-3, split their two games last week. They dropped a close 71-67 decision at fellow power Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, but rebounded with a 64-56 road triumph at Hilliard Bradley.

The Irish are averaging an impressive 70.3 points-per-game.

Warren Harding

Warren Harding, which has split its last two games against a strong schedule, remains No. 4 in the mahoningmatters.com Super 7 rankings.

The Raiders routed the Hawken Hawks 71-46 but dropped a 69-58 decision to No. 3-ranked Ursuline.

Warren Harding is 5-2 on the season.

Youngstown Cardinal Mooney

Youngstown Cardinal Mooney remains the No. 5-ranked team in our ratings.

The Cardinals, who reached Ohio’s Elite 8 last season and returned some key players from that team, split their last two games, posting a 62-51 win at Austintown Fitch and dropping an 87-66 decision at Elyria.

Mooney is 6-2 on the season and is averaging 61.1 points-per-game.

Columbiana

Columbiana moves up from No. 7 to No. 6 in this week’s rankings.

The unbeaten Clippers, who lead the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference standings, are 8-0 on the season.

The Clippers posted a win over an out-of-state opponent last week, defeating the Brooke (Wva.) Bruins, 51-41.

Columbiana is averaging 57.9 points-per-game.

Warren JFK

Small-school power Warren JFK rounds out this week’s rankings in the No. 7 spot.

The Eagles went on the road to play fellow small-school state power Berlin Hiland last week and dropped a 50-35 decision in a defensive-dominated game to the unbeaten Hawks. Before that, the Eagles rolled past Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas, 68-52.

The Eagles are 5-2 on the campaign and are averaging 66 points-per-game.
