Canfield, which looks like it could be a strong state tournament contender come February, remains the No. 1 team in this week’s mahoningmatters.com Super 7 girls basketball poll. Here’s a look at this week’s rankings:
Canfield
Canfield, which has been No. 1 since the poll began, remains in that position after another impressive week.
The Cardinals, who are one of the top Division IV teams in Ohio, are 11-0 on the season while playing a very challenging schedule.
The Cardinals are fresh off wins over Laurel (47-45), GlenOak (43-28) and Boardman (38-31) in the past 10 days.
Canfield is averaging 52.1 points-per-game while yielding just 32.7 points-per-outing.
Columbiana
Unbeaten Columbiana, which knows all about strong defense, remains No. 2 in the ratings.
The Clippers are 9-0 on the season and are the top team statistically on defense in the greater Mahoning Valley.
They are giving up just 24.7 points-per-game.
The Clippers defeated the Lisbon Blue Devils 59-10 in their most recent game.
West Branch
West Branch moves up from No. 4 to No. 3 in this week’s mahoningmatters.com Super 7 poll.
The Warriors, who are 9-1 overall, lead the Eastern Buckeye Conference with a 6-0 record.
West Branch, which is one of the top defensive teams in the area, along with Columbiana, are coming off a 41-18 league win over Minerva.
The Warriors have held three of their opponents under 20 points this season.
Warren Harding
Warren Harding jumps up to No. 4 in this poll.
The Raiders are 9-2 and recorded an impressive 55-39 win over Austintown Fitch in their most recent game.
Harding’s other wins this winter have occurred against Akron Firestone, Struthers, Youngstown Ursuline, Hubbard, Massillon, Akron Buchtel, Lakeview and Youngstown East.
Youngstown Chaney
Youngstown Chaney holds down the No. 5 spot in the ratings.
Chaney bested Mineral Ridge (73-66) and Warren Champion (61-23) in their most recent games.
Austintown Fitch
Austintown Fitch is the No. 6 team in the rankings.
The Falcons, who play a rugged schedule, are 6-5 but have three impressive wins over Walsh Jesuit, West Branch and Hathaway Brown this season.
LaBrae
LaBrae rounds out this week’s poll at No. 7.
The Vikings are 8-2 on the season and have won five games in a row with wins over Windham, Newton Falls, Champion, Brookfield and Girard.
They are averaging 50.3 points-per-game, while allowing just 33.5 ppg.
